Ammonia Emission

The activities of the agriculture sector account for the largest percentage of ammonia emission. The principle sources of discharge emanate from livestock manure: in livestock buildings, during storage, and from spreading on fields.

Ammonia is discharged into the atmosphere leaving traces on plants, the ground and on the surface of water. A very intensive livestock production can have a profound impact on the finely balanced eco-systems in environmentally sensitive areas such as sensitive forests and nature conservation sites.
In Denmark current total ammonia emission amounts to approximately 80 tonnes per year. This figure represents a vast improvement. From 1985 to 2001 the total emission has gone down by 28% due to a very tough environmental policy and stricter legislation.
As a consequence of this stricter environmental legislation in Denmark, a variety of advanced technological and practical solutions to reducing ammonia loss from the primary sources in farming have been developed.
